Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The C.R. Batten photograph collection consists of 1,948 photos and slides taken by Charles Batten during his career working as a freelance writer and as the director of communications for the California Forest Protective Association. Photos in the collection consist of forest landscapes, California Redwoods, tree farms, timber industry machinery, wildlife, important figures in forestry, graphs, cartoons, and family outings. Most photographs are of the Mountain West region and California, but also included are photos taken in Kansas, and the Black Hills, South Dakota. Many of the photographs were part of articles, presentations, or press releases he was preparing. As well often there is additional information and even documents accompaying the images. Of particular interest are unique images of protests by members of the logging community to the proposed expansion of Redwood National Park in 1977, and photography projects that show forest growth after five, ten, and fifteen years after clear-cutting. Boxes 8 and 9 consist of unprocessed miscellaneous slides.
