Historical Note

The Utah Wool Growers Association came into existence on March 16, 1935. Based in Salt Lake City, the Association was formed to:

  1. 1) foster and protect the sheep and wool industry within the state
  2. 2) uphold the rights of wool growers within the state to use the national forests and the public lands for their needs
  3. 3) oppose the enactment of legislation designed to destroy or injure the sheep or wool industry
  4. 4) publish and circulate literature presenting the industry to the public
  5. 5) hold state and local exhibitions and contests to promote the acceptance of their products
  6. 6) assist financially in asserting or defending the rights of members of the association when conditions are such as to affect the common interest, and
  7. 7) acquire by purchase, lease or otherwise such real or personal property as may be deemed necessary to carry on the business of the Association

Membership requirements of the Association encourage participation not only of those owning sheep, but of those owning shares of stock in corporations owning sheep as well. Within the state association, members are organized into local associations serving various regions of the State. Members of the local associations meet annually for a statewide convention, and each autumn gather for the state ram sale. The Association publishes its own newsletter, "The Utah Wool Grower," and is a sponsoring agency for the annual Miss Wool of Utah and Miss Wool of America competitions.

The Utah Wool Growers Association is one of twenty-two state and regional associations which comprise the National Wool Growers Association. This National federation's primary concerns are the major legislative activities involving sheep producer's interests; support of research in sheep diseases and other industry problems; coordination of the national ram sale; and promotion of wool products through exhibits and contests such as the Miss Wool of America Pageant.
