Scope and Contents

This collection contains the blueprints of improvements made to the Logan-Cache Airport by the Civil Aeronautics Administration, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and Logan City from 1941 to 1970. They document improvements made to the airport as a result of its role as a host for World War II pilot training and the subsequent introduction of commercial airline service.

Historical Note

Logan Chamber of Commerce president T.H. Humphreys first proposed the construction of an airport in Cache Valley in the late 1920s, with the support of local aviation pioneers such as Floyd D. Hansen. By 1933, the former wetland northwest of town boasted two gravel runways. It was not until World War II, however, that significant expansion and modernization of the airport took place.

Realizing the need to once again build up forces due to threats overseas, the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPT) was established in 1939 to offer students preliminary flight training in preparation for military service. This program selected universities across the country to run ground training and contract with private operators to provide flight training for prospective aviators. The Logan Chamber of Commerce and the Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University) sought to participate, eager to get Cache Valley involved in the war effort. However, this required expanding and re-graveling the runways in order for the Logan-Cache Airport to qualify. These alterations were made by late 1939, and by early 1940 the federal government announced a need for airports, allowing for the Workers Progress Administration (WPA) and the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) to provide the funds necessary to add an additional runway and improve the entire airport infrastructure.

Thanks in part to these wartime improvements, commercial service came to the Logan-Cache Airport in 1946. The franchise for the airport was awarded to Western Air Express, and their inaugural flight took place on August 22, 1946, carrying both passengers and airmail. Regularly-scheduled passenger service continued into the 1980s, with West Coast Airlines, Key Airlines, and Transwestern Airlines all serving the airport at various times. The airport continues to host a number of private airplanes, as well as the Utah State University aviation program.

The source of this collection is unknown; however, paperwork accompanying the donation includes the contact information for Wes Davidson, a technician in the Industrial and Technology Education department. The materials were donated to USU Special Collections and Archives around 2010.
