Senator John P. Holmgren papers
Scope and Contents
This fifty-six box collection consists of the professional papers of Senator John Holmgren and concern his political activities during the period of 1981 to 1989. His papers consist of correspondence, reports, personal notes, legal papers, and various other papers. The topics documented in this collection include Utah's economy, agriculture, water, energy, the environment, the storage of nuclear waste, and other similar topics. Although the materials primarily pertain to Utah as a whole, some materials in this collection concern Cache Valley, such as the controversy of widening the highway which passes through Logan Canyon. The collection also contains materials that concern other western states, such as finding a proposed site to store nuclear waste in Nevada and Colorado.

Biographical Note
John P. Holmgren was born March 12, 1933, in Tremonton, Utah the son of LeRoy P. and Gladys Nyman Holmgren. After completing his basic education in local schools, Holmgren attended Utah State University. On November 7, 1952, Holmgren married Janice Hansen in the Logan Temple and they later had three children. Thereafter Holmgren worked as a farmer and was the co-owner of Brigham Implement. Holmgren was a member of the Brigham City Kiwanis, South Box Elder County Farm Bureau, and the Boy Scouts of America. He also served on the Bear River City Council and Box Elder County Commission.
In 1985 Holmgren was elected to the Utah State Senate (District 24) and began his fourteen-year political career. During his time as a Utah State Senator he served as chairman of various committees, including the Social Service Standing Committee, Social Service & Health Appropriations Committee, Human Services & Health Appropriations Committee, Transportation & Public Safety Appropriations Committee, and Bear River & Health Care Task Force. He also served on the State Board of Water Resources for eight years and was known for his efforts in water conservation and development. He retired in 1998. Holmgren died on December 8, 2003.
