Scope and Contents

The collection contains materials pertaining to the life of H.C. Jackson including financial records like account books, receipts, and invoices. It also contains correspondence, photographs, ecclesiatical materials, and drawings done by Mr. Jackson. Of note are meeting minutes and other records from the Paradise Ward, some of which are found mixed in with the financial information in the account books. While the majority of the materials are from the Henry Clark Jackson family, there are also materials from the Griffith and Obray families who are related to the donor, Lydia Mae Kendrick.

Biographical Note

Henry Clark Jackson was born June 3, 1819, in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England, to Robert Jackson and Hannah Clark. Henry, a blacksmith, married Ann Oades and in 1846 and both were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The couple departed England for Utah in 1848, though they did not arrive in Salt Lake City for another four years. In 1861, Jackson took a second wife, Mary G. White, and spent several months a year in Cache Valley, Utah. In the mid-1860s, he and his family moved to Paradise, Utah, permanently and resided there for another 40 years. The father of 11 children, Jackson was an active member of the Paradise Ward of the LDS Church, holding the office of Patriarch. He was also prominent in local government, serving as Justice of the Peace in Paradise and Recorder for the Paradise Mining District. Jackson died in 1905.
