Davis and Weber Counties Canal Company papers
Scope and Contents
The papers in this collection chronicle the founding of the Davis & Weber County Canal Company and its early canal building projects. Although this one-box collection is relatively small, it contains several important historical documents, such as the letters and papers from the Union Pacific Railroad Company's Land Department, pertaining to the sale of railroad land (which had been granted for the construction of the transcontinental line) to the canal company. Also included are letters from the prominent Utah industrialist, Ephraim P, Ellison, who served as president of the canal company from 1898-1937.

Historical Note
The Davis & Weber County Canal Company (DWCCC) was established October 1, 1898 to carry Weber River water from Riverdale, Utah, to Kaysville, Utah. The DWCCC was financed by the Peoples Bank & Trust Company through the auspices of the Utah Mortgage & Loan Company of Logan, Utah. Since its creation the DWCCC has built numerous canals and reservoirs, which has resulted in the growth of various agricultural communities and towns along the water routes. Tragedy struck on July 11, 1999, when a breach occurred on the DWCCC irrigation canal near Riverdale, Utah, resulting in the evacuation of hundreds of people, substantial property damage, and a water shortage that affected local culinary and agricultural users. Notwithstanding the accident of 1999, the DWCCC is still in operation today.
