Farmers Cooperative Irrigation Company papers

 Collection
Identifier: UUS_COLL MSS 110

Scope and Contents

This collection documents two periods of the company's history, 1903 and 1923. As might be expected, both periods concern finances. In 1903 the Fanners Cooperative Company bonded with the Peoples Bank and Trust Company in order to upgrade their capital facilities. Of the documents from this transaction, perhaps the most interesting and enlightening is a 1902 abstract, written by U.M.L.Co. Vice-president A.J. Thampson, that chronicles the early development and growth of the Payette river irrigation project and the early settlement of the Payette Valley. The 1923 material again documents a bond issuance by the Peoples Bank and Trust Company.

The collection, although small in size, addresses two significant themes regarding the agricultural development of the intermountain west. One being, the involvement of Utah capital in financing these projects. And, the other being, the legal opinions, from western lawyers, that appear in the collection.

Historical Note

The Farmers Cooperative Irrigation Company came into being in 1900 when they purchased the Payette Valley Irrigation and Water Company. This new company was an Idaho based corporation bonded by New York investors. In 1902 the Company wished to retire these New York bonds, and recapitalize. Through the auspices of the Utah Mortgage and Loan Company of Logan, Utah they contracted for new bonds with the Peoples Bank and Trust Company of Rockford, Illinois.
