Scope and Contents

This collection contains the photograph collection for five projects completed by Design Workshop, Inc.:

Kananaskis

Resort community project in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where Design Workshop managed the construction process with the utilization of an environmental analysis, 1979-1986.

High Desert

A planned community in Albuquerque, New Mexico that provided Guidelines for Sustainability, which developed plans for conservation of water, protection of open space, preservation of views, and improvement of wildlife habitats, 1989-2007.

Starwood Ranch

A project for Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz near Aspen, Colorado, 1989-1993.

Summerlin

A neighborhood and community center in Las Vegas, Nevada that incorporated an urban plaza, a performing arts amphitheater with covered stage, picnic areas, tennis courts, a playground and basketball courts,1986-2005.

Note: Headings encased in quotations are taken directly from the slide itself when available. Many of these slides are the original and may be the only copy in existence.

The slides were kept in their original order while the prints were organized according to project.

Biographical Note

Design Workshop, Inc. is a leading international landscape architecture firm founded in 1969 by Joe Porter and Don Ensign while they were professors at North Carolina State University. Both received bachelor's degree from Utah State University in 1963 in landscape architecture. Other USU graduates that joined the firm were Richard Shaw, Todd Johnson and Terrall Budge. The firm's projects range from private gardens to resort development. The design teams are highly praised for their innovative use of attractive features while having the least impact on the site's ecology and natural views. Although based in Denver, Colorado the firm has offices in Asheville, North Carolina; Aspen, Colorado; Austin, Texas, Lake Tahoe, Nevada; and Salt Lake City, Utah.

In addition to various awards received by Design Workshop Inc., in 2008 the firm was named the top landscape architecture firm in the country by the American Society of Landscape Architects. For additional information, please refer to Design Workshop, Inc.'s website at

Abstract

This collection contains prints, slides, negatives, photocopies and framed prints of various Design Workshop Inc. landscape architectural projects.

Arrangement

Box 1 contains prints from Kanasaskis project; box two contains slides from Kananaskis, High Desert and Summerlin; box 3 contains Starwood Ranch slides; box 4 contains prints and negatives for Summerlin; and box 5 contains two oversized framed prints.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials in this collection were donated to Special Collections & Archives by Design Workshop, Inc. in 2009 and 2010.
