Historical Note

Overgrazing, deforestation, and the loss of vegetation in the Wasatch Mountains led to erosion and contributed to periodic flooding. The Willard Flood occurred in August of 1923. Flood waters crashed down upon the town of Willard, leaving 155 acres covered in three feet of debris. Property damage was extensive; an estimated 75,000 to 85,000 dollars was lost in damage. The flood in Willard contained two main branches of flow, one that followed the stream bed, carrying most of the debris, and another that spread out over a larger area. Willard was not the disaster’s only casualty; other canyons along the Wasatch, most notably Farmington, experienced flooding as well.
