Scope and Contents

The Athena RTV project was a rare example of interstate missile tests within the U.S. The project was conducted to simulate the delivery and assembly of rockets, as well as testing the re-entry of ICBMs.

The Biosatellite III project was designed to investigate biological processes in space.

Biographical Note

Richard Henry Parker was born in 1921 and entered West Point Military Academy in July of 1940. He graduated from Mira Loma Flight Academy as a Cadet in July of 1942, and flew missions as a fighter bomber pilot in Europe and during the Korean War. He was later appointed Colonel and became administrator for the Athena RTV rocketry project before retiring from the military in 1968. After his retirement he was appointed Deputy Project Manager for the Biosatellite III project carried out by NASA. Richard H. Parker died in 2002.

Abstract

This collection consists of photos relating to the life and career of Colonel R.H. Parker. The photo collection includes images of the construction and completion of the Athena RTV Rocketry project in Green River, Utah, and images of the Biosatellite III project.
