Historical Note

The Folklore Society of Utah (FSU) was established in 1958 under the influence and direction of prominent Utah folklorists and scholars of the time, including Juanita Brooks, Olive Woolley Burt, Thomas E. Cheney, Austin E. and Alta S. Fife, Wayland Hand, King Hendricks, Lester A. Hubbard, Hector Lee, Jennings C. Olson, J. Golden Taylor, Louis C. Zucker, and others. FSU promotes and nurtures the study of folklore by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the folklore of Utah and surrounding areas. Beyond collection and preservation, the society makes folklore available both to the general public and to scholars by maintaining an archive (FOLK COLLECTION 28), publishing material, and presenting information through an annual meeting, formal lectures, concerts, festivals, events, and gatherings on folklore.
