Biographical / Historical
Underwood & Underwood was a prominent American publishing company best known for its pioneering work in stereoscopic photography and news photography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded in 1881 by brothers Elmer and Bert Underwood in Ottawa, Kansas, the company initially focused on selling stereographs—paired photographs viewed through a stereoscope to create a 3D effect. By the early 1900s, Underwood & Underwood had become one of the largest producers of stereoscopic images in the world, with an extensive catalog covering travel, education, and current events.
