Biographical / Historical

Arthur Marshall was an avid hiker and climber who became known for being the first to reach the highest point in each of the 48 existing US states. Marshall kept extensive journals of his travels, which seem to have influenced how Marshall organized his photo albums: each photograph is noted with the date, a description, and a numerical code the likely connected the photo to the relevant journal entry. While Marshall’s journals aren’t part of this collection, these codes are still used to reference other photos on occasion.
