Biographical / Historical

The 1999 Salt Lake City tornado struck downtown Salt Lake City on August 11, 1999, becoming the first recorded tornado to hit the city since modern record-keeping began. Rated an F2 on the Fujita scale, the tornado carved a roughly 4.5-mile long path through the city’s west side and downtown area, damaging or destroying dozens of buildings, toppling trees, and causing an estimated $170 million in damage. One person was killed and more than 60 were injured. Directly in the tornado's path was the Outdoor Retailer expo where dozens of companies were setting up retail booths under the cover of commercial tent structures.
