Biographical / Historical
The Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation is developing a cultural interpretive center at the site of the 1863 Bear River Massacre near Preston, Idaho, where an estimated 250 to 500 Northwestern Shoshone men, women, and children were killed by U.S. Army troops under Colonel Patrick Edward Connor. For decades, the tribe has worked to preserve the site, reclaim ancestral lands, and ensure that the massacre is interpreted from the perspective of the Shoshone people. Following the acquisition in 2018 of hundreds of acres encompassing much of the historic site, the tribe began planning a permanent cultural and interpretive center to document the history of the Northwestern Band and the events of January 29, 1863.
The planned center will include interpretive exhibits, memorial spaces, educational facilities, and restored natural areas designed to provide historical context for the massacre and the broader history and culture of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation. The project also includes wetland and habitat restoration along the Bear River, integrating environmental stewardship with historic preservation. When completed, this location will serve as a resource for public education, cultural preservation, and commemoration of one of the deadliest attacks on Indigenous people in United States history. -- Source: https://nwbshoshone.com
