Biographical / Historical

The American Women's Himalayan Expedition was a mountaineering expedition organized in 1978 by climber Arlene Blum to demonstrate the capabilities of women in high-altitude climbing at a time when opportunities for female alpinists were often limited. Two members of the international team successfully summited Annapurna I (26,545 feet) in Nepal on October 15, becoming the first Americans and the first all-women's team to reach the summit. The expedition is also remembered for its significant challenges and losses, including the deaths of climbers Vera Watson and Alison Chadwick-Onyszkiewicz during a subsequent summit attempt. Widely recognized as a landmark in the history of mountaineering, the expedition advanced the visibility of women in alpine climbing while contributing to the broader history of Himalayan exploration.
