This collection contains records relating to the Chesapeake Duck Club and, more generally, the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge that document the history of the club and enumerate the environmental conditions of the Utah wetlands from 1950 to the mid 1970s. Organizational and financial records include meeting minutes that indicate the steps the club took to manage this portion of the wetlands as well as correspondence that shows members’ positive experiences with the club. Historical Note

The Chesapeake Duck Club began in 1903 as a private, recreational hunting club. The club was located in the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in Box Elder County, Utah and though they focused on duck and waterfowl hunting, they also sponsored pheasant hunting. The club also provided club members with amenities such as lodging and food as well as hunting amenities including duck blinds. Along with others like the nearby Duckville Hunting Club, the Chesapeake Duck Club promoted environmental policies that protected waterfowl and the marshland in which they lived. Such activities included monitoring and controlling invasive species populations, maintaining marsh water levels, and planting vegetation that supported waterfowl populations. The club remained in operation as of 2019.
