Scope and Contents

This collection consists largely of DVDs of news broadcasts produced by Louise Degn from 1969 to 1990. The topics covered on each disc have been listed on the inventory. The last box contains Degn’s autobiography and vita, as well as an index of her news stories and transcripts of “Utah Women Considered” and “Let the Women Vote!” This box also contains a transcript of “Mormon Women and Depression" and a summary of the reaction to its cancellation.

The DVDs are arranged in the order they were received from Degn, which is roughly chronological.

Biographical Note

Louise Degn was born in Logan, Utah, but grew up in Ogden where she graduated from Ogden High in 1964. She earned a B.A. in political science from Utah State University in 1968 before completing an M.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University in 1970. In 1969 KSL hired her as a news reporter making her the second female television journalist in Utah. During her 40-year career, Degn worked at KSL, WBBM in Chicago, KBYU in Provo, and the Communication Department at the University of Utah, winning 13 awards for her work. One of her most popular and controversial programs was “Mormon Women and Depression,” which was cancelled due to pressure from leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Relief Society. A very respected and well-known journalist, Degn worked as the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Utah as of 2012.
