"Corporal Angus Robertson, a Marine Corps Combat Photographer, took this dramatic picture of a Leatherneck falling (foreground), after being struck by red hot shrapnel from an exploding Jap mortar shell. "After Saipan Island was secured, Marines found the body of Lt. Gen. Yoshige Saito, of the Imperial Japanese Army, in a cave above Tanapag, on the northern end of the Island. He is believed to have ordered the last "Banzai" charge by the Japs on July 7. Circumstances indicated that high ranking officer made an unsuccesssful attempt to commit hari kiri with a knife and had to have an aide finish the task. General Saito was given a funeral with full military honors in accordance with the Geneva Convention Code", 1944
